For home makers
Compliance & insurance, and why they matter
This is a plain-language guide, not legal advice. Following the rules that apply to your own selling from home is entirely on you -- this page and the templates linked from it are a starting point, not a substitute for your own research or a professional's advice.
It is also how you win repeat buyers
Compliance is not just a rule to follow -- it is one of the clearest ways a buyer decides whether to trust you again. Using good ingredients and following labeling and safety practices does not just keep food safe and tasty; it is what gives a buyer the confidence to come back to you instead of trying someone new. Showcasing that you take this seriously -- clear labels, a valid permit, a tidy setup -- is a real, visible signal on a platform where buyers cannot see your kitchen for themselves.
Why it protects you personally
Permits, correct labeling, and liability insurance exist to protect you, the seller -- not just as a formality. A valid Cottage Food permit and accurate labeling are what stand between you and real liability if something ever goes wrong; homeowner's or renter's insurance frequently does not cover a home business at all, which is why a dedicated business liability policy is worth understanding even if it feels optional. Homewaala's own insurance, if any exists, does not cover you, your products, or your services -- see the seller attestation for the exact wording.
Primary sources (not Homewaala's interpretation)
- CDPH Cottage Food program -- registration/permit classes, the approved-foods list, and labeling rules for California home-based food sellers.
- County environmental health department directory -- your local health department administers Cottage Food registration and inspections.
- CA henna/PPD consumer-safety guidance -- natural henna only; "black henna" (PPD) carries a real chemical-burn risk and is not permitted.
